I hope everyone reading this article had an enjoyable holiday season and you are ready to enter 2011 with your batteries recharged and eager to make the most of the 12 months that lie ahead.
It seems appropriate at this time to take a moment to recognize and honor several residents who care enough about our community to have invested a great deal of time to become more knowledgeable about the nature of homeowner associations and how they can best be effectively managed.
These are the residents who have earned the certification of Dedicated Community Association Leader (DCAL), awarded by the Nevada Chapter of the Community Associations Institute (CAI).
The CAI Nevada Chapter has just completed its 20th year. For those who don’t know, CAI is a national organization dedicated to fostering vibrant, harmonious community associations. CAI is the leader in providing education and resources to the volunteer homeowners who govern community associations and the professionals who support them. Membership in the 60 CAI chapters includes HOA volunteer leaders, professional managers, community management firms, and others who provide products and services to associations.
Through classes, seminars, books and other publications, as well as public workshops, CAI brings together experts to provide the latest information on association management and governance. The vast majority of Nevada associations, law firms, insurers, HOA accountants, reserve specialists and other vendors are members of CAI.
DCAL certification is earned by attending a rigorous schedule of classes and producing articles for the Nevada chapter’s monthly magazine. Participation in the DCAL program gives community volunteers the confidence, knowledge, integrity and experience that increases their value as volunteers.
Congratulations to the following Sun City Anthem residents who, having already served the community in various volunteer capacities that include committee and Board membership, are now holders of DCAL certification. When you see them, thank them for their service:

On another blog, a resident expressed the following opinion about those who volunteer to serve their community by being elected to their Board of Directors. I have slightly edited the comment for grammar and readability, but have not added anything to what this resident has to say. As you read his comments, perhaps you can understand why such opinions discourage many dedicated community volunteers from running for the Board and allowing us to benefit from their experience and dedication:
From my experience? Boards are made up of "wannabes"....people who want to be in control of their own neighbors, who want to be in the "limelight"......And they almost always have their "own agenda"! They are NOT interested in bringing the community together! NO, they instead like the feeling of "Royalty" they may get by serving as a Board Member! And they usually are never interested in what their neighbors may think on any given 'issue'! NO, they are IN charge! They never want the homeowners to ever have a say in their HOA. And personally? I say: "SHAME ON THEM"!!!
